Fauvism Art Movement – Overview
Fauvism is derived from French Term les Fauves (the wild beasts), it is a group of modern artists of early 20th century whose art works representational and had realistic values of impressionism and had strong color combination. Leaders of this Fauvism art movement included Henri Matisse and Andre Derain. This art movement was started in around 1904 and lasted for few years beyond 1910.

Gustave Moreau who was a very well known French symbolist painter was the inspirational teacher behind Fauvism art movement. He students included names like Marquet, Matisse, Manguin, Rouault etc.

Salon d’Automne 1905
At the Salon d’Automne of 1905, the critic Louis Vauxcelles saw the bold color paintings of painters like Jean Puv, Albert Marquet, Henri Matisse, Maurice d Vlaminck and disparaged these artists as Fauves (the wild beasts) thus gave a name to their movement.

Matisse, Derain, Albert Marquet, Jan Puy, Jean Metzinger, Kees Van Dongen, Raoul Dufy, Hneri Manguin, Othon Friesz, Georges Braque, Maurice de Vlaminck etc.
