Charles IV. Prague / Nuremberg
Joint exhibition by the Free State of Bavarian and the Czech Republic
15.05.2016 – 25.09.2016 Wallenstein Riding School, Prague
20.10.2016 – 05.03.2017 Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg
Emperor Charles IV is one of the most important and multi-faceted rulers in Bohemian and German history. To mark his 700th birthday, the Free State of Bavarian and the Czech Republic are holding a joint exhibition.
The exhibition will explore the life and rule of Charles IV in the context of the chequered events of the 14th century. It offers a critical appreciation of his ruler personality, his concept of power, and his importance for the residential cities of Prague and Nuremberg, as well as his representation in art. One particular topic addressed by the exhibition is the very different perception of Charles IV in Bohemia on the one hand and Germany on the other, which persists to this day.
Around 140 examples of panel and book painting, sculptures, goldwork, textiles, crafts, scripts and official documents, weapons and coins, as well as other archaeological and climatological objects, film sequences, and audio points provide new and exciting insights into this ruler and his century.
The exhibition is sponsored by the prime ministers of the Free State of Bavaria and the Czech Republic.
